Literacy Promotes Local Development & Participation

Literacy programs are not confined to teaching the skills of reading, writing, and arithmetic. They also transmit values and shape attitudes about the world and the community environment. In this way, they make a substantial contribution to personality development.

Literacy allows people to bring their personal interests into processes of local development. By learning how to read, write, compute, observe, think, and use language effectively, people become empowered to participate in society. Literacy is a prerequisite for social inclusion, especially for women, young people, and disadvantaged groups.

Literacy is an important basis for the development and improvement of personal capacities, capabilities, and key qualifications. It opens up livelihood possibilities and creates conditions for the lasting economic and social development of the country.

Education is a human right. On the occasion of World Literacy Day 2008, the director of ANAFAE demanded stranger national and international commitment to non-formal education, the implementation of national education strategies, and the Literacy Action Plan.
